WEST VIRGINIA
CONCEALED CARRY
In West Virginia, no license is required to carry a concealed handgun.
Must be 21 years old.
18-20 year olds can conceal carry by getting a Provisional Concealed Handgun License (CHL).
A concealed carry license (CHL) is issued by the sheriff’s office of the county you reside in.
To receive a CHL, it requires attending a training course on the use of handguns.
OPEN CARRY
In WV, no license or permit is required to openly carry a handgun or long gun.
Must be 18 years old.
MOTOR VEHICLE CARRY
West Virginia allows adults to have a concealed handgun in a car or vehicle.
Concealed handguns in a vehicle are allowed to be loaded.
Uncased long guns (loaded or not) are allowed in a vehicle.
No license or permit is required.
Must be 21 years old.
NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT (NFA) FIREARMS
Lawful firearms allowed in WV:
Short-barreled rifles
Short-barreled shotguns
Silencers (suppressors) are also lawful.
HUNTING
Loaded shotguns and rifles are allowed in a vehicle for the purpose of hunting.
West Virginia has varying laws regarding firearms and hunting, consult your local authorities.
FIREARM TRANSFERS & SALES
No license or permit is required to buy a handgun in West Virginia.
No registration of firearms is required.
There is no waiting period when buying a firearm.
No background check is required between private parties for the transfer of firearms.
WV requires a person to be 18 years old to buy a deadly weapon, including handguns and long guns.
There is no limit to the amount of firearms bought at one time.
AMMUNITION REGULATIONS
In West Virginia, no license is required for the sale of ammunition.
No license is required to buy ammo.
No license is required for the possession of ammo.
No records are required to be maintained for ammunition sales.
Armor-piercing bullets are lawful.
